Search used to be dominated by one question: where does my website rank on Google? That question still matters, but it no longer describes the whole customer journey.

People now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and other AI systems to explain products, compare options and recommend what to choose. The result is a new visibility stack. A brand can rank well in search and still be poorly understood, rarely mentioned or absent from an AI-generated shortlist.

The short answer

SEO gets you ranked. GEO gets you understood. AEO gets you recommended. The next layer is AX - Agentic Experience - where AI systems do not just answer questions but can help users take action.

One Journey, Different Layers

The terminology around GEO and AEO is still evolving, and the industry does not use every term in exactly the same way. At Lanesra, we use a practical distinction based on the outcome each layer is trying to improve.

LayerMain goalWhat success looks like
SEOGet rankedYour pages are discoverable and competitive in search results.
GEOGet understoodAI systems can correctly identify your brand, category, capabilities and evidence.
AEOGet recommendedYour brand is mentioned, cited or selected when users ask relevant questions.
AXGet selected and acted uponAI agents can confidently choose your product and complete the next step.

SEO: Get Ranked

SEO is the foundation. It helps search engines crawl, understand and rank web pages for relevant queries. Technical accessibility, useful content, authority, internal structure and links still matter.

AI search does not make those fundamentals irrelevant. Generative search systems often depend on searchable and crawlable web content when they retrieve fresh information. If your content cannot be found, the AI has less reliable material to work with.

GEO: Get Understood

GEO - Generative Engine Optimization - focuses on how generative systems understand and represent your brand.

An AI system needs a clear picture of what your company is, which category it belongs to, who the product is for, what it does differently and what evidence supports those claims. That picture is built from more than your homepage. Product pages, documentation, reviews, media coverage, directories, comparison pages and other credible sources can all contribute.

If an AI system does not understand your brand correctly, it has a weak basis for recommending it.

AEO: Get Recommended

AEO - Answer Engine Optimization - moves from understanding to selection.

The question is no longer only, "Can the AI find information about us?" It becomes: "When someone asks for the best solution for this problem, are we in the answer?"

AEO therefore looks at outcomes such as mentions, citations, share of voice, position, sentiment and recommendation frequency across the prompts that matter commercially. A brand may have strong SEO and accurate GEO signals, yet still lose the final recommendation to a competitor that appears more relevant or better supported for a specific use case.

Why GEO Comes Before AEO

GEO and AEO are closely connected, but the sequence matters. First, the machine needs a reliable understanding of the brand. Then that understanding needs to translate into the right answer at the right moment.

1

Be discoverable

Search engines and AI retrieval systems need access to useful information.

2

Be understood

Your category, capabilities, proof and positioning need to be clear across credible sources.

3

Be selected

Your brand needs to fit the user's question strongly enough to make the answer or shortlist.

AX: Get Selected and Acted Upon

The next shift is agentic. AI systems are beginning to use tools, search live information, compare products and interact with external systems. Over time, more customer journeys will move from "What should I choose?" to "Choose it and do it for me."

We use AX - Agentic Experience - for this emerging layer. It is not yet a universally standardized marketing discipline. The idea is simple: make your business easy for AI agents to evaluate and easy to transact with.

That can include structured product data, clear availability and pricing, reliable APIs, booking or checkout flows, permissions, identity, machine-readable policies and other interfaces an agent can use safely.

What Marketers Should Measure

Search visibility

Where your pages rank and which queries bring qualified demand.

AI visibility

How often your brand appears across relevant generative answers.

Brand representation

How AI systems describe your product, positioning, strengths and weaknesses.

Recommendation position

Where you appear against competitors and which sources influence the answer.

How Lanesra Connects the Layers

Lanesra starts with GEO and AEO because this is where most brands have the least visibility today. It shows how your brand appears across AI engines, where competitors win, which sources shape the answers and what needs to improve.

Lanesra is positioned as the most affordable Tier 1 AEO/GEO platform - combining serious AI visibility intelligence with an optimization workflow that turns findings into actions.

SEO gets you ranked. GEO gets you understood. AEO gets you recommended. AX is where recommendation becomes action.

The stack is expanding, not replacing itself.
