AI Search Is No Longer a Side Channel
Buyers increasingly use AI to discover, compare and evaluate brands before visiting a website. Visibility now means more than ranking on Google: brands also need to be understood, mentioned and recommended inside AI answers.

AI search is moving into the core buying journey. Customers are increasingly using AI to research categories, compare products, evaluate brands and build shortlists before they ever visit a website.
The short answer
The question is no longer only “Do we rank on Google?” Marketers also need to know whether AI systems mention their brand, understand it correctly and recommend it when it fits the user's needs.
Discovery is shifting
Traditional search usually begins with a query, a list of links and a series of clicks.
AI search changes that flow. A user can ask a question, receive a synthesized explanation, compare alternatives, refine the criteria and form a shortlist inside the same conversation.
Forrester reports that AI is already deeply embedded in B2B buying behavior. On the consumer side, McKinsey found that half of surveyed consumers intentionally seek out AI-powered search.
Discovery is moving from finding pages to receiving answers.
Search results and AI answers are different surfaces
SEO optimizes pages to be discovered and ranked. AI search introduces another layer because the final answer may be assembled from multiple sources before the user ever visits a website.
Google explains that its AI search experiences can use query fan-out, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources before constructing a response. Google Search Central

This changes what marketers compete for. The goal is no longer only to win a ranking position. It is also to become part of the evidence an AI system uses to form its answer.
Your website is only part of the evidence
AI systems do not rely exclusively on what a brand says about itself.
McKinsey found that, in many cases, brand-owned websites represent only 5% to 10% of the sources referenced by AI-powered search. The broader evidence layer can include publishers, reviews, communities, marketplaces, affiliates and other third-party sources.
The exact source mix varies by model, category, location and question type. But the implication is clear: strong website SEO alone does not guarantee strong AI visibility.
AI visibility is shaped across the web, not only on your website.
Your brand can rank well and still be missing from the answer.
The three questions marketers need to ask
Does AI mention us?
Track whether your brand appears for the questions that matter to customers.
Does AI understand us?
Check whether products, positioning, pricing, features and use cases are represented accurately.
Does AI recommend us?
Measure whether your brand is included in the shortlist when it genuinely fits the user's needs.
This is where AEO begins
Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, focuses on how brands appear inside AI-generated answers.
It does not replace SEO. SEO remains important for crawlability, technical quality, authority and traditional search demand.
AEO extends measurement into the answer layer.
SEO, GEO and AEO work together
SEO
Make your content discoverable, crawlable and competitive in traditional search.
GEO
Make your content and wider evidence layer useful to generative systems that retrieve, summarize and cite information.
AEO
Measure and improve the final answer outcome, including whether your brand is mentioned, understood and recommended.
Google explicitly states that established SEO practices remain relevant to its generative AI search experiences. The goal is therefore not to abandon SEO, but to extend visibility beyond rankings. Google Search Central
The click is moving later
In traditional search, the click often starts the research process.
In AI search, a customer may already understand the category, know the alternatives and have a shortlist before visiting a website.
That makes referral traffic an incomplete measure of AI influence. A buyer can be influenced by an AI answer without clicking any citation.
Measure visibility where the decision is being shaped, not only where the traffic eventually lands.
What marketers should do now
Map the questions buyers ask
Build a prompt set covering discovery, comparison, evaluation and purchase-intent questions.
Track AI answers
Measure mentions, position, sentiment, recommendations and citations across the AI engines that matter to your audience.
Find the evidence gaps
Identify missing facts, weak sources, inaccurate descriptions and competitors that dominate important prompts.
Improve the source layer
Strengthen your own content and the credible third-party sources that AI systems rely on.
The shift
The question is no longer only:
Do we rank?
It is also:
Does AI mention us?
Does it understand us?
Does it recommend us?
Discovery is shifting from search results to answers. Marketing measurement needs to shift with it.
