AEO Basics - What Is Prompt Coverage?
Prompt coverage shows how much of the AI search demand around your category your brand actually appears in. Here is how marketers can build and measure a useful prompt set.

Traditional SEO asks: which keywords do we rank for?
AEO adds another question: which questions do we appear in when people use AI to research, compare, and choose?
That is the role of prompt coverage.
The short answer
Prompt coverage is the share of relevant AI prompts in which your brand is visible. It helps marketers see whether their AI presence is broad enough across the real questions buyers ask - not just a handful of favorable examples.
One Category Creates Many Prompts
A buyer looking for project management software may ask:
- What are the best project management tools?
- Which tool is best for agencies?
- What is a cheaper alternative to [brand]?
- Which platform has the easiest onboarding?
- What should a 50-person team use?
- Which tools integrate with our existing stack?
These prompts are related, but they express different needs. A brand that appears for only one of them has limited coverage even if that one answer looks strong.

A good prompt set covers the full journey. Otherwise, marketers can overestimate visibility by tracking only the prompts where they already perform well.
How to Calculate Prompt Coverage
There is no universal industry formula. A practical version is:
Prompt coverage = relevant tracked prompts where your brand appears / total relevant tracked prompts.
If your brand appears in 48 out of 100 priority prompts, your basic prompt coverage is 48%.
But coverage alone is not enough. You also need to know how you appeared.

Which Prompts Matter Most?
Do not chase maximum coverage across every imaginable question. Prioritize prompts with commercial relevance.
A useful prompt library combines category demand, real customer questions, sales objections, competitor comparisons, use cases, industries, locations where relevant, and high-intent decision questions.
Then segment the results. A company may have 80% coverage in awareness prompts but only 20% in recommendation prompts. That gap is strategically more useful than one blended score.
Where Lanesra Fits
Lanesra helps teams build a structured view of prompt coverage across AI search, then connects those prompts to mentions, recommendations, citations, sentiment, source influence, and competitor performance.
The result is a map of where the brand is visible and where the market is still being handed to someone else.
The important question is not "Do we appear in AI search?" It is "How much of the decision space do we actually cover?"
