AEO Basics - What Are Prompt and Query Fanouts?

Query fanouts explain why AI search looks beyond the exact question a user asks. Here is how one prompt becomes multiple searches, why that matters for AEO, and what marketers should optimize for.

A user asks one question. AI search may run several searches before it answers.

That difference matters. If your content only matches the exact wording of the user's prompt, you may miss the other questions the AI is trying to answer behind the scenes.

The short answer

A query fanout happens when an AI system turns one user question into several related searches. Those searches can cover comparisons, reviews, features, brands, use cases, freshness, or other subtopics. The AI then uses the retrieved information to build one answer.

One Prompt, Several Searches

Imagine someone asks:

"What is the best project management tool for a 30-person agency?"

An AI search system does not necessarily treat that as one keyword query. It may break the problem into several information needs.

One prompt can fan out into searches such as:

Comparisonbest project management software 2026
Use caseproject management tools for agencies
BrandsAsana vs Monday vs ClickUp
Proofproject management software reviews
Decision factorspricing, integrations, collaboration features

Google publicly describes this as query fan-out: concurrent related queries generated to retrieve more information for a user's question. Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews can use the technique across subtopics and data sources.

People sometimes use the phrase prompt fanout more broadly. For marketers, the useful idea is the same: one customer question can create a larger hidden research path.

Why Fanouts Matter for AEO

Traditional SEO often starts with the query you want to rank for. AEO has to think one level further.

The question is not only, "Does our page answer the prompt?" It is also, "Does our brand have credible evidence across the related questions the AI may retrieve?"

If the model searches for comparisons, you need comparison context. If it searches for reviews, third-party reputation matters. If it searches for the current year, stale content becomes a disadvantage. If it searches for a specific use case, generic product copy may not be enough.

What AI Systems Add

A large 2026 third-party analysis examined 5 million fanout queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Grok. The study found that the systems expanded prompts differently. In that dataset, ChatGPT commonly added comparison and review language, while Grok generated many more research-style subqueries.

Observed in a third-party dataset collected April 1-21, 2026. These results are not published platform specifications.

The same study found that words such as best, top, comparison, reviews, tools, software, and features were frequently added to ChatGPT fanouts.

That helps explain why AI search often cites comparison pages, review sites, category roundups, and other third-party sources when answering commercial questions.

How to Optimize for Fanouts

The answer is not to create hundreds of thin pages for every possible variation. Google explicitly warns against producing scaled content mainly to manipulate search or generative AI responses.

Instead, build stronger coverage around the decisions your buyers actually make.

Cover the main decision criteria

Explain use cases, features, limitations, pricing logic, alternatives, and who the product is best for.

Strengthen third-party evidence

Reviews, comparison sites, credible publications, communities, and expert coverage can become part of the retrieval path.

Keep important pages current

If fanouts add the current year or look for recent comparisons, outdated content can lose relevance.

Use the language of real decisions

Think beyond product keywords. Buyers ask "best for", "vs", "reviews", "alternatives", "pricing", and "is it worth it?"

Where GEO and AEO Fit

GEO helps AI understand your brand. It improves the consistency, context, and authority of the information AI systems can retrieve about you.

AEO helps your brand become part of the answer. It focuses on the questions, evidence, comparisons, and sources that influence whether an AI system mentions or recommends you.

Fanouts connect the two. They show why one customer prompt can depend on many pieces of evidence across the web.

What Marketers Should Measure

You do not need to chase every hidden subquery manually. What matters is whether your brand survives the research path those queries create.

Lanesra helps teams measure where they are mentioned, cited, compared, and recommended across AI search, which sources influence those answers, and where competitors are stronger. It is positioned as the most affordable Tier 1 AEO/GEO solution for teams that want serious AI visibility intelligence without enterprise-only pricing.

The practical lesson: optimize for the full decision, not just the first question.
