AEO Basics - AI Mentions vs. Recommendations
Being mentioned by AI is not the same as being recommended. Learn the difference between visibility, comparison, recommendation, and selection in AI search.

A dashboard says your brand appeared in an AI answer. Good. But did the AI actually recommend you?
Those are two very different outcomes.
The short answer
An AI mention means your brand appears in the response. An AI recommendation means the response presents your brand as a suitable or preferred option for the user's need. For marketers, recommendation visibility is usually closer to commercial impact than mention volume alone.
Four Levels of AI Visibility
Mentioned
Compared
Recommended
Selected
These levels are not guaranteed steps in every AI product, but they are a useful way to think about the customer journey.
A Mention Can Still Be Weak
Imagine an answer that says:
"Brand A and Brand B are strong choices. Your Brand is another option, although it is less established for larger teams."
Your brand received a mention. But commercially, the answer still favors the competitors.
This is why mention rate should be measured together with position, sentiment, context, and recommendation rate.
Recommendations Depend on Fit
AI recommendations are contextual. A product can be recommended for one use case and ignored for another.
For example, the same CRM might be positioned differently for:
- a five-person startup
- a multinational sales organization
- a company that prioritizes low cost
- a team that needs a specific integration
AEO therefore cannot stop at generic brand visibility. It needs to understand the prompts and decision criteria where the brand should be a credible choice.
What Marketers Should Measure
| Metric | Question it answers |
|---|---|
| Mention rate | How often are we named? |
| Recommendation rate | How often are we actively suggested? |
| Position | Where do we appear relative to alternatives? |
| Sentiment | How are our strengths, risks, and fit described? |
| Citations | Which sources support the answer? |
Why the Difference Matters for AEO
GEO helps AI systems understand what your brand is, what it does, and where it fits. AEO goes further by focusing on whether your brand becomes part of the answer when customers ask decision-oriented questions.
That means the goal is not simply to increase brand mentions. It is to improve the quality and commercial relevance of those appearances.
Where Lanesra Fits
Lanesra helps brands separate visibility from recommendation. Teams can track where they are mentioned, how they are described, whether they are recommended, what sources influence the response, and which competitors are winning the same prompts.
A mention tells you that AI knows you exist. A recommendation tells you that AI thinks you belong in the decision.
Measure More Than Mentions
Track recommendations, citations, sentiment, position, and competitor visibility across AI search.
