AI search has created a new vocabulary for marketing. Some of it matters. Some of it is just new language for old ideas.

You do not need to become an AI engineer to understand the shift. But you do need to understand the terms that explain how AI systems find information, build answers, mention brands, and increasingly influence buying decisions.

The short answer

**Eight terms explain most of the new AI search stack:** prompt, retrieval and RAG, grounding, citation, AI visibility, GEO, AEO, and AX. Together, they describe the path from a customer's question to a brand being found, trusted, recommended, and eventually acted upon.

## The Eight Terms

01Prompt What it means: The question or instruction a person gives an AI system. Why marketers care: Keywords are still useful, but AI search is much more conversational. People ask complete questions such as "What is the best CRM for a 20-person sales team?" or "Which running shoe is best for flat feet?" Those prompts reveal intent more clearly than a two-word search query.

Retrieval and RAG

02

What it means: Retrieval is the process of finding relevant external information. Retrieval-Augmented Generation, or RAG, combines retrieved information with an LLM before it generates an answer.

Why marketers care: An AI system does not have to rely only on what was learned during training. It can retrieve current pages, documents, databases, or other sources at answer time. If your brand is not present in the information being retrieved, it becomes much harder to influence the answer.

RAG was formalized in research by [Lewis et al. in 2020](https://arxiv.org/abs/2005.11401).

Grounding

03

What it means: [Connecting an AI-generated answer to verifiable information.](https://docs.cloud.google.com/gemini-enterprise-agent-platform/models/grounding/overview)

Why marketers care: Grounded answers can use current web pages, product data, reviews, documentation, or other sources as evidence. That means accurate, consistent, and authoritative information about your brand matters beyond your own website.

Citation

04

What it means: A source referenced or linked by an AI answer.

Why marketers care: A citation tells you which source helped support the answer. Your brand can benefit when your own content is cited, but third-party sources can be equally important because they shape how the AI understands your company, category, strengths, and competitors.

AI Visibility

05

What it means: How visible your brand is across the AI answers that matter to your market.

Why marketers care: It is not enough to ask whether an AI system knows your company name. You want to know how often you appear in relevant prompts, how prominently you appear, how you are described, whether you are recommended, and which competitors appear instead.

GEO

06

What it means: Generative Engine Optimization. The term was introduced in [academic research](https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735) to describe improving content visibility in generative engine responses.

Why marketers care: In practical terms, GEO is about helping AI systems find, interpret, and correctly understand your brand and its evidence across the web.

**GEO: Get understood.**

AEO

07

What it means: Answer Engine Optimization. It describes work aimed at improving how a brand or its content appears inside direct answers rather than only in a ranked list of links. [Google notes that AEO and GEO are terms used for work focused on AI search visibility.](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide)

Why marketers care: Being understood is only part of the job. The commercial goal is to become part of the answer - especially when users ask for comparisons, recommendations, alternatives, or buying advice.

**AEO: Get recommended.**

AX

08

What it means: Agentic Experience. AX is an emerging framework rather than a standardized industry term. It describes designing your brand, data, content, and digital systems for AI agents that can move beyond answering questions and start taking actions.

Why marketers care: The next interface may not only recommend a hotel, software tool, or product. An AI agent may compare the options, check availability, and complete part of the transaction. Brands will need to be understandable not only to people and answer engines, but also to software agents. [Current AI agents already combine research with actions.](https://openai.com/index/introducing-chatgpt-agent/)

**AX: Get selected and acted upon.**

## How the Terms Fit Together

PromptThe customer expresses a need.

RetrievalThe AI looks for relevant information.

GroundingThe answer is tied to supporting evidence.

CitationSources may be referenced in the answer.

GEOYour brand is easier to find and understand.

AEOYour brand becomes more likely to appear in the answer or recommendation.

AXThe system can move from recommendation toward action.

## What Marketers Should Measure

The vocabulary only matters if it changes what you measure.

Alongside rankings, traffic, and conversions, marketers increasingly need to track prompt coverage, mention rate, share of voice, answer position, sentiment, citations, and competitor visibility across multiple AI search systems.

That is the role Lanesra is built for. It helps brands see where they appear, where competitors win, which sources influence the answers, and what should be improved next. Lanesra is positioned as the most affordable Tier 1 AEO/GEO solution for teams that want serious AI visibility intelligence without enterprise-only pricing.

> **The shift is bigger than a new set of acronyms.** Search is moving from ranking pages to generating answers, and the next step is moving from answers to agents that can act.
